The purpose of Adult IOP is to provide a comprehensive program of substance abuse services for those who lack insurance coverage or the financial resources to obtain private treatment for residents of Montgomery, Elmore, Autauga, and Lowndes counties. The Intensive Outpatient Program provides a treatment setting that is less restrictive than residential treatment yet permits individuals in treatment to receive professional care without disrupting their home environment and employment status. CAP IOP follows the Matrix Model of substance abuse treatment. The Matrix Model is an evidence based/best practices model of substance abuse treatment endorsed by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA). It provides a set of focused lesson plans for groups and individual sessions developed by the Matrix Institute in California consisting of informational DVDs with accompanying literature for family group sessions and worksheets addressing specific recovery-related topics for groups and individual sessions. The model is unique in that a successful graduate of the treatment program, a ‘co-leader’, assists the group facilitator and serves as a practical role model for later recovery and a liaison between the treatment group and local 12 Step community. The principal focus of the Matrix model is teaching clients the skills necessary to maintain abstinence from alcohol and drugs as they initiate the process of recovery, and teaching them about issues and skills relevant to preventing relapse once sobriety has been achieved. The information included in the Matrix Model is based on clinical research conducted by the Matrix Institute. Treatment is provided in the Pegasus Center which houses comfortable private office spaces for individual and family therapy and spacious group rooms equipped with DVD/VCR equipment and other audio/visual aids for group sessions. Comprehensive treatment in IOP includes individual counseling, HIV testing and education, family counseling, group counseling, family education, drug testing, and AA and NA support group involvement.
